Disney will be continuing their live action movie making with an Aladdin reboot by director Guy Ritchie. While the search for the lead roles of Jasmine and Aladdin are still underway, it’s being reported that Will Smith is currently in talks to voice Genie.

Variety states the super-star actor has been looking for a more family-friendly film as his next project, as was expecting to star in the live action version of Dumbo, but backed out due to scheduling conflicts.

Disney was still very interested in working with Will, so the studio shortlisted him when this opportunity arose.

Released in 1992, Aladdin originally starred Robin Williams as the voice of Genie, which has went on to be one of his most iconic roles. The film went on to be THE most successful film of 1992, with earnings of $217 million in revenue in the United States, and over $504 million worldwide.

Aladdin’s success led to other material inspired by the film, including two direct-to-video sequels, The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves, an animated television series of the same name.
