This morning we reported that Aretha Franklin was in Detroit with her family around her as her health is said to be failing. This news came from WDIV-TV anchor Evrod Cassimy stating she was asking for our prayers. Beyonce was performing in Detroit Monday and dedicated her show to Aretha saying “We love you,” standing next to Jay-Z. DJ Khaled played her hit Respect earlier in the show. Later in the day it was revealed that she’s been suffering from cancer the last 8 years. In December 2010 she underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer and has frequently been ill since. Family friend Tom Joyner revealed later in the day on Monday that Aretha was receiving hospice care which generally is the end of the line for most people.

Robert Smith, pastor at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit where he father was the reverend said Aretha’s reps have asked him to continue praying for her. “Everybody’s fearful,” Smith said. “I really don’t know what it would be like not to have her.” As we previously reported, a biopic on Aretha’s life will begin filming next year starring Jennifer Hudson and if we’re lucky Aretha will be able to live to see it come to fruition. All isn’t lost as the possibility is there. The Washington Post did a series on “The Business of Dying” not long ago where studies showed people are being discharded from hospice care at increasingly higher rates so it’s possible her condition may not be as bad as thought and she may be able to make a turn around from there.
