The American Crime Story actress Penelope Cruz has been chosen as the new face of Chanel serving as their brand ambassador for their cruise campaign. It seems as though she’s been auditioning for this for years as she’s worn a number of Chanel pieces over the years as well as from Lagerfeld, the photographer for the campaign. Her first Chanel show she attended was in 1999 and one of her more memorable Chanel pieces worn on the red carpet was the black evening dress covered in gold chains in 2009’s Broken Embraces.

“It’s such an iconic brand and Karl is a genius, and I’ve been admiring everything he’s done since I was a little girl, so it’s such a pleasure working with him. He’s like the king of fashion and we had a really, really interesting photo shoot, so to be in front of his camera is an adventure,” Cruz told WWD in her official announcement to them of her brand ambassadorship role.

This of course isn’t Penelope’s first time around the fashion collab track as she and her sister Monica Cruz who’s doubled for her on set before have designed for lingerie brand Agent Provocateur and created handbags for Loewe. This however is the holy grail of fashion partnerships and absolutely enviable to say the least. And why is that? It’s because Chanel is not only one of the most recognized by coveted and successful fashion brands. Econsultancy.com recently called them the most influential brand on social media. The key word here is exclusivity and the aspiration to obtain that lifestyle portrayed online.

Penelope made her first appearance as the new face of Chanel Tuesday, July 3rd in Paris at the Chanel Haute Couture Fall Winter 2018/2019 show. She wore a white beret, pink tweet dress, nude pumps and pink signature Chanel purse. Backstage to Women’s Wear Daily she spoke about her obsession with Lagerfeld.

“I’ve been a fan of fashion since I was 12 or 13. I’d get all the fashion magazines from my mum and would study them from beginning to end,” she said, recalling Lagerfeld’s start at Chanel in 1983. “I remember the fascination from the beginning….It is so interesting to see what they have created; they’ve created a fantasy that has very solid roots because he’s a genius,” said Cruz, pointing to the designer, who was greeting guests nearby.

“It’s not just the image and the fantasy; you look at every single thing he creates, he’s a true artist. There are only a few of them, on that level of creativity, and always reinventing themselves. I have so much admiration for him,” said the actress, who for her next film role will be playing Pedro Almodóvar’s mother when he was a child. “So it’s a pretty cool and interesting week for me,” added Cruz, wafting her invitation to try and stir up some air. “Going from Karl to Pedro back-to-back, it’s kind of amazing.”

Furthering her fashion resume, Penelope now has her own Atelier Swarovski collection. Her first pieces from her collection were worn on the red carpet at her first event as the new Chanel brand ambassador. She even wore a few at Cannes.

“It’s a dream to be able to wear your own collection,” explained Cruz. “They have given me a space to have a voice and an opinion — it’s really a collaboration, that’s not a fake collaboration where you just give your name and you haven’t done anything,” she said.

“We’ve done it together and I’m very grateful for that,” added the actress, who recalled growing up without much jewelry. She went on to reminisce her grandmother Modesta’s gold and garnet ring that helped start her love for jewelry despite typically wearing minimal pieces. “It always had my attention. Sometimes when I was at her house I would ask her to let me wear it for a day and then, when she was older, she gave it to me and my sister to share,” she said.

Penelope Cruz, Chanel and Lagerfeld definitely seem to be a manifested dream and match made in heaven. But since the conclusion of The Assassination of Gianni Versace, we need her to get back in front of the camera. There’s no surprise she would do amazing in fashion but the real challenge as she’s said herself is acting. She’s said in the past “The most difficult thing in the world is to start a career known only for your looks, and then to try to become a serious actress. No one will take you seriously once you are known as the pretty woman.” Lucky for her at this point in time she’s proven to be both a pretty face and great actress. We just don’t want her to forget about those acting chops.
