Michelle Obama Explains What Really Happened During the Bizarre Gift Exchange with Melania

Ahh yes, I remember it like it was yesterday. Picture It…Sicily, 1922. No, in all seriousness, on Inauguration Day 2017 when Donald Trump was to take the White House, his wife, Melania presented Michelle Obama with a gift and the memes have been going on for the last year. It was bad enough that Michelle showed up with a bun in her hair, signaling many that she didn’t want to be there in the first place, but the look on her face when she received the Tiffany box was priceless. It almost seemed she was looking for the nearest trash can that very second.

Well Michelle made an appearance on Ellen to explain the situation and also to help her celebrate Ellen’s 60th birthday on the first episode of a two part birthday series. First, regarding the awkward look on her face, it’s because these political events are carefully choreographed and receiving a gift wasn’t on the agenda… so it threw things off.

“There is all this protocol,” Obama says in a clip from Thursday’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

“I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re gonna do this, they’re gonna stand here. Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like: ‘Okay, where… ? What am I supposed to do with this gift?’”

“Everyone cleared out, and no one would come and take the box. I’m thinking: ‘Do we take the picture?’ And then my husband saved the day,” she said as she watched a video clip of the gift exchange.

“See? He grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out — no staff, no one. I was like, ‘What do you do with the box?’”

Finally, what was in the box for crying out loud.

“It was a lovely frame,” Obama said.
