‘LEMONADE’: Beyonce Makes History As Only Artist To Debut At #1 With First 6 Albums

The numbers are in. Beyonce’s Lemonade album has managed to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, with sales of 653,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 28, according to Nielsen Music. In pure album sales, the record sold 485,000 copies.

Releases on April 23 through HBO and Tidal, The 12-song visual album was released by Parkwood/Columbia Records following the film’s debut. By Monday, April 25, the album — which is bundled with the film — went on sale through other digital retailers. This also makes Beyoncé the first act to have her first six albums to debut at #1.

Due to his untimely passing, Prince has five albums within the Top 10 list, with The Very Best of Prince holding the #2 spot with 391,000 units (216,000 pure album sales), Purple Rain 150,000 units (133,000 pure album sales), The Hits/The B-Sides 106,000 units (56,000 pure album sales), and Ultimate with 40,000 units (37,000 in sales).

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new May 14-dated chart (where Lemonade is No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, May 3.
